Communication

Mail
Stamps (francobolli) may be purchased only at appointed tobacco shops and at the post office. Airmail with insufficient postage is not returned to sender, but is sent via surface mail, which can take weeks or even months to reach the recipient. Post offices are open weekly from 8.30 am - 2 pm. On Saturday and on the last day of the month they close at 12 pm. Post offices at airports and main post offices in large cities are open 24 hours a day for registered mail and telegram services. For more information, check out Poste Italiane's website at http://www.poste.it/en/

Telephone
Public telephones are available throughout Italy and require the use of a phone card. These phone cards (Carta Telefonica) can be purchased at any newsstand, tobacco shop or bar(coffee shop). The cards cost 1, 2.5, 5 or 8 €. Local calls cost .31 € per unit (about five minutes).

Italian telephone numbers can include 4, 5, 6, 7, or even up to 8 digits. It is mandatory to dial the area code even if you are dialing a local number. All area codes start with "0" except for cell phones, which never have a "0" and usually start with "3". Long distance calls (Interurbano) between major cities can be dialed directly on the public telephone by using the proper area code number.
