Shopping
Rome has abundant of wonderful
products which can easily trigger
shopaholics to go wild. However,
shopping in Rome (as well as every
where in Italy) has its catch
especially if you go to big stores
because shop keepers generally do
not allow you to touch or inspect
the product closely before buying.
For bona fide haute couture items,
they are certainly going to be
costly. Major hunting grounds are Via
Condotti, Via Borgognona and
Via Frattina. However, if you
like to collect tacky souvenirs such
as posters, postcards, keychains or
other little ornaments in the shape
of miniature Pantheon, Colosseum or
even the tiny figurine of David,
these products are generally of good
quality and they are aplenty at any
of the souvenir shops next to the
tourist centers or one of the many
street markets in the
city.
Dining
Rome has myriad of eateries to cater
to your appetite, but the truly
authentic dishes are mostly cooked
and served in small family
restaurants hidden in street corners
where most tourists tend to
overlook. Spaghetti is not generally
consumed in quantity by the locals,
but many tourist-oriented
restaurants will carry varieties of
this dish to ameliorate their
foreign customers who feel homesick
for a familiar dish. Fail these, you
can opt to one of the fastfood
joints like McDonald's or dine at
one of the places with specialized
cuisine such as French, Mexican,
Chinese, Thai, Japanese or Greek.
Popular dining districts in general
are Via Cavour, the area
around the Termini station, San
Lorenzo, Testaccio and Trastevere.
Nightlife
To begin the night with, you can go
to the old Rome in the early evening
when auto traffic is banned on
Friday and Saturday nights until
late to enjoy the passeggiata or
early evening stroll and marvel at
the wonders of Rome and check out
potential venues you might hit as
the night progresses. House music is
generally the norm at many of the
clubs in Rome, but lately there have
been places with more adventurous
themes such as rock and hip-hop. The
most popular areas for night birds
are the Via dei Corso, Piazza
Navona, Via Condotti and
Via di Spagna.
