GETTING THERE & AWAY

Air

Venice's main airport is the Marco Polo Airport (VCE), 16 km northeast of the city. There are buses leaving the airport every 20 minutes for Piazzale Roma and the Venice-Mestre railway station (travel time: 20 minutes), and taxis (pricey) are also available. If you want an authentic Venice experience (albeit at a higher price), you can also board a waterboat service and water taxis which run from the airport to Venice.

A few charter flights land at San Giuseppe Airport in Treviso which is about 35 km north of Venice. From here, there is a one-hour Eurobus service to Venice.

Train

Trains to Venice stop at the Stazione di Santa Lucia (known locally as ferrovia). The station is located at the end of the Ponte della Libertà in the Cannaregio sestiere (district), in the northwestern corner of town.

Bus

Traveling to Venice by bus is traditionally the cheapest way to get to the city. The bus station is on the southern side of the Grand Canal.

Car

The A4 is the direct line to reach Venice from both east and west, but visitors can only drive to as far as the Tronchetto island or Piazzale Roma and continue with a vaporetto (motorboats). The parking fee is quite expensive. A cheaper alternative is to leave your car in Mestre since parking here costs only a fraction of what it costs to park your car in Venice. Then, you can travel to Venice by train which departs every 5-10 minutes or by one of numerous buses.

GETTING AROUND

Venice reward walkers with ample antique pavements which lead you to experience and appreciate the authentic city's layout full of enchanting backstreets, winding alleys and canalsides. The historic center is divided into six quarters, they are San Marco, Dorsoduro, San Polo, Santa Croce, Cannaregio and Castello. The city's main thoroughfare is the Grand Canal which you can either buy a travel pass for the vaporetto or take a gondola which may cost quite a substantial sum of your expense. There are regular buses running from Piazzale Roma to Mestre as well as other mainland destinations, and taxis can be found here as well.
