Verona has always been famous for
its outstanding culinary tradition
which has been passed down from
generation to generation. Today, the
Veronese cuisine art is practiced by
the master-chefs who create or
improve on existing recipes that
results in dishes of very fine
tastes. Some of the recommended
dishes include Asparagi di
bassano (thick asparagus,
completely white that are served
boiled with vinaigrette, or else
with eggs), Fegato alla veneziana
(calf's liver fried with onions) and
Gnocchi (potato dumplings -
the local staple starch).
Verona's best known desserts are Pandoro
di Verona (a star-shaped cake
flavored with orange flower),
Natalino (special Christmas
cake), and Sfogliatine (special
flaky pastry biscuits).
The best wines in Italy come from
the district of Verona. Valpollcella
and Bardolino are red,
perfumed and slightly sparkling,
while Soave wine is white and
strong. As the Veneto produces more
DOC wine than any other region in
Italy and are highly appraised
throughout the world, it's not
surprising that Italy's main wine
fair, VinItaly, is held in Verona.
The festival takes place in April
and offers abundant sampling
opportunities.
