GETTING THERE & AWAY

Air

Verona's international airport is Valerio Catullo in Villafranca, 12 km southwest of the city center. There is a shuttle bus service (APT bus) every 20 minutes between the airport and the Porta Nuova railway station and Piazza Cittadella near the center.

Train

Verona's railway station is the Stazione Porta Nuova south of the Piazza Brà, and it's easily accessible via the west-east Milan-Venice line as well as the north-south Brennero-Rome line. At least 30 trains daily run west from Venice (86 min. to 2 hr.). Even more arrive from Milan (85 min. to 2 hr.). Trains also connect Verona with Vicenza (30-50 min.); Padua (35-50 min.); and Bologna (40 min. to 2 hr.).

Bus

The bus station, A.P.T. (Azienda Provinciale Trasporti) is located at Piazza XXV Aprile, directly across from the train station. Buses arrive here from all regional destinations. Although there is bus service to Vicenza, Padua, and Venice (only the summertime departures for Venice are direct; in other months there's a change), it is generally easier to travel by train.

Car

The Serenissima autostrada (A4) links Venice and Milan; the exit for downtown Verona is Verona Sud. Coming from the north or south, use the A22 autostrada and exit at Verona Nord.

GETTING AROUND

Via Roma, Via Mazzini, Via Cappello, Via Leoni and Corso Portoni Borsari are all exclusively pedestrian precincts. The city buses are colored orange and marked AMT. Tickets can be bought at tobaccherie (tobacconists) which display white 'T' outside the shop and from newsagents, and they must be obtained before you board the bus. A daily tourist ticket is also available and is valid for all routes in the city. You can visit Lake Garda and the Veronese mountains by taking a regional bus colored blue. The bus station is in the square outside Porta Nuova Railway Station. Tickets for these buses must be purchased in advance. Taxis are available but they do not just stop anywhere, their ranks can be found at the railway station and in the city center or upon appointment by phone.
